The relationships between the species of the genus Photuris—P. pensylvanica, P. cinctipennis, P. lucicrescens, P. versicolor, and P. tremulans—have not yet been established. Photuris pensylvanica can be differentiated by the general coloration of the pronotum, legs, and elytra.

Pennsylvania Firefly is an elongated beetle whose brown-patterned yellow surface is covered by dense scales. The head is covered by the pronotum. The antennae are long and filiform. The legs are adapted for walking on foliage. The base of the tibia and apex of the femur are yellow, while the rest of the leg is brown.
